sun run 2008

I did it! Sunday I woke up a little confused as to WHY the heck I voluntarily was choosing to get up at 7AM on a Sunday morning, throw on my yoga pants and sweatshirt and travel downtown to run 10 kilometres. Does not sound like that much fun, right? My friend Vanessa and I drove the fifteen minute drive to the Skytrain station, and after a thirty minute Skytrain we arrived at the Granville Street exit. Based on our time category, we were schedule to start just a block from Granville, and we found our way around really easily. We wedged ourselves into the massively crowded start line by 8:58AM...we left the house at 7:40AM that morning. It was already a tiring day and we hadn't started.
Vanessa and I, proudly showing our numbers.
We then proceeded to wait in freezing (3 degrees C) weather for forty-five minutes. Thankfully I wore a long sleeve shirt, and a hoodie overtop. I pulled my hood right around my ears, and I was wearing gloves so I covered my nose and face with both my hands. And I jumped around a lot. For 45 minutes. FINALLY we started, and I was feeling good. I am a really analytic person, and whenever I'm in a crowd, can pretty much get completely lost in my thoughts. Sunday was a perfect day for getting lost "in my thoughts." Sooo many people to look at, and the city had bands playing practically at every kilometre. It was so cute, lots of non-runners were out on their balconies or on the sides of the roads with their coffees, clapping and cheering. Before I knew it, I was done!
It's a wonderful feeling...running. Pretty amazing that the little girl who absolutely abhorred running in elementary school finished a 10K happily. I am definitely not a natural runner, and I've worked hard at getting fit over the last four years of my life; Sunday was a great celebration of that. Before Sunday I had never run more than 6km before, but I knew that I was in good physical shape, so I didn't worry and turns out, I finished 10km without really feeling tired!
Vanessa finished six minutes ahead of me, but she decided to go ahead at about the four kilometre mark. I lost track of her up ahead over the course of the last 40 minutes obviously, so it took us a lot of time to meet up.
Here was the day's schedule. So ridiculous.
7:40AM: Leave House
8:55AM: Check Gear for pick-up later.
8:58AM: Get to Start
9:45AM: Cross Start Line
10:55AM-ish: Cross Finish Line
11:15AM: Finally get out of the CROWD at the finish line and into BC Place Stadium.
11:20AM: Look for Vanessa.
11:25AM: Grab a banana and a mini-bagel because I feel very hungry.
11:40PM: Find Vanessa amongst 20,000 people at BC Place.
11:45PM: Walk all over with Vanessa and ask volunteers who don't know what they're talking about where the Gear Check is.
11:50PM: Find gear check.
11:50PM: With finding the gear check came finding the long, wrap around line.
12:20PM: Finally get our bags and car keys, etc.
12:25PM: Sky-train.
1:00PM: Into my car.
1:20PM: Home.
My time, as I saw in the paper on Monday, was 1 hour and 12 minutes. Sunday night, I was starting to get really sore and was still excited about the morning, but the waiting times were just ridiculous that I said, "It was fun, but I won't do it again--good experience though." But Monday when I saw my name in the paper and saw my time, the first thing I thought is, "I'm beating that next year!!"
