las vegas to phoenix | day two

This morning I was woken up in a panic, “Get up! Breakfast is over in 30 minutes!” That’s so typical of the Peterson family. We often stay in hotels that include breakfast, because when feeding four each morning, it can really save some cash to eat for free in the hotel rather than eating out. Unfortunately, the continental breakfasts are often only available until nine or ten. And, when we’re in vacation mode, we’re in vacation mode. Getting up at 8:30 in order to get four people up and showered and dressed in time for breakfast before ten? Doesn’t sound much like rest to me.
My parents, as I would later find out, woke up at 7AM. My dad showered, dressed, did devotions and read his bible, my mom did the same. At about 8:30AM, my brother and I still fast asleep, they realize the alarm clock in the hotel room was not adjust for daylight savings time and it was actually 9:30AM. So they wake us up, and we quickly head down for breakfast. Let me tell ya, it is so unfair to be a girl. My brother just throws on jeans and a t-shirt over his boxers and he goes. I, not really realizing the entire family is dressed until we’re almost in the hallway, complain that I was told the idea was eat breakfast in pajamas and then get ready afterwards. So I trudge to the breakfast room, in my favourite Sufjan Stevens t-shirt that reads, “Feel the Illinoise!” and pajama pants, flip flops, greasy bedhead, and ghost-like pale face. Attractive.
We stopped at a restaurant about halfway between Las Vegas and Phoenix, called Calico’s. My parents remembered us stopping at the same restaurant probably ten years ago on a similar drive. I love memories like that. Points and places in your life where you can stop and think, hey where was I when I was here last, or when I did this last? The restaurant was just so cute. Very old-fashioned. Quaint. The waitress had a Texan accent, and refilled my brother and dad’s “sodas” by bringing a small cup of sprite and diet coke to the table and proceeding to pour it into their glasses. That’s new.
When we are on driving trips, and I’d hardly call this six-hour drive today a “Driving Trip,” my family always likes to take it nice and slow. We stop all the time, actually about every two to two-half hours. Just to get water, go to the bathroom, take pictures, whatever. So, after lunch we stopped to get some pictures out in the desert just for fun.
A little behind the scenes shot...
The few flowers we found out here in the desert.
Brandon and me, walking oh so non-chalantly towards the camera.
My parents.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the drive out here. It’s beautiful, although not that scenic: it is desert after all. We just saw an amazing golden sunset. I love the sunsets in California and Arizona. The light is wonderful. I am just dying to take some photos of my parents/brother/aunt and uncle in this light.
I’m also enjoying the time I’ve found to read. I finished a book I started on the flight yesterday, Three Weeks with my Brother by Nicholas Sparks. Wonderful, wonderful book. Of course, I loved reading The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember & The Guardian. Nicholas Sparks really has an amazing story to his life; I love personal memoirs. I don’t know what it is about his writing lately though, because I bought his last novel, True Believer, and it made me want to…throw up. Very cheesy. I don’t think I even finished it. Anyway, that’s all the rambles for today.
